Well then, I guess that'll be your friends' loss then eh (or yours I guess)? It isn't a bad idea at all. It stops you from spending a ton of money and it just means that you only need to buy the system and get the controller that comes with it and bring that one to other places. With things shifted to begin using wi-fi, does it not make sense for your friends to have their own system as well so that they don't have to make the trek to your place for gaming all the time?
I honestly don't see any problem with it at all aside from people being too stubborn and not looking at how this actually works.
Also also, if you buy a 5000 point card for the Virtual Console ($50 I believe? Basically gets you lots of downloaded games), you get the classic controller with it. Although it's $20 so that one's really cheap anyway.
And if all you're worried about is playing Smash Bros Brawl with friends, that won't matter anyway because it uses GC controllers (or possibly that cheap classic controller).
