You know what, I was going to create a topic just like this. I ponder this often myself. I've came up with these reasons.
Most of today's generation of DDR players started with DDR Extreme(ARC). Of course, that didnt have characters..thus when these people buy the console versions after playing Extreme, they see something in the background they are not used to and hate it instantly.
I believe if Konami kept the characters on every DDR game, there would be less haters. However I heard when they first made DDR MAX(ARC) they had problems mixing characters with the new BG videos causing it to crash. Well since they worked very hard on those BG videos, its no surprise they ditched them for awhile. But remember, the characters returned to the console versions and SuperNova(ARC) by request of fans.
I myself started with the old 1st mix, so I've always loved the characters and I even love them more than the seizure inducing BG Videos. So I was jumping with joy when most of the songs on SuperNOva were replaced with a stage instead. Hmm..easy on the eyes + less time to make = stages>BG videos, IMO.
What I find most funny is how people say the characters are distracting yet they are okay with the flashy BG videos. It really doesn't make sense. Heh, if it were up to me I would put 10 characters at once on screen to mess with their heads.
I will say one thing, if Konami ever ditches the characters again, I'll quit DDR. For some reason, I can't play a game without characters of some kind. I wont even touch DDRMAX(U.S.) anymore. Heck, I bought a xbox just because I heard Charmy was going to be on Ultramix 4. Yeah, what seperates me from most DDR players is that I'm a total DDR Charanut. I even know most of their backhistory.
Okay, i'll shut up now. |
