Super Mario 64 does involve a fair amount of the recycling you're discussing, but there are more individual levels than there are in Sunshine, and there are a number of levels that change substantially from goal to goal. I'd also say that the level design is on the whole better than Sunshine's in terms of variety, challenge, and the like.
There's a reason it's still used as a benchmark for 3D platformers, and it's because it's one of the very best. If you haven't tried it I really recommend that you drop the $10 on it.
