"let me go over this in detail:
legend mode, you pick a character. after that, you pick a legend you want to fight against.
you start at level 1 and work your way up via points you earn from things like GI, GB, combos, overkill, ringout, perfect and so on.
after each match those points are talied and you get stat points to place in any of these 4 catagories:
strength
dex (which affects all sorts of special things like recovering from moves faster, life drain, easy GB, easy CH, anti RO, and anti CH)
vitality
and luck (which affects things like breaking throws)
generally the CPU opponents you face will be higher levels than you. you can tell their stats outside of strength by the grades that show before the match. you can gauge vitality by how blue their lifebar is.
in the 5th match you will face the legend you selected to fight. win, and you get to drop or raise their stats.
That is one way to raise the stats of a legend character.
dropping the stats also drops the level.
the 8th match will be against the legend character of the character you were fighting as. win or lose you will be allowed to raise the character's stats. only if you win are you allowed to lower them. by how many points is determined by how many total points you got during the 8 matches.
that being the case, it only takes someone with lots of money to be the resident legend of a certain character - completely skilless.
if your level is higher than the legend's level before the match, you only need to win the match to become the new legend.
if your level is within 99,999 points, you need to win and get however many points needed to become the new legend.
should you become the next legend you will enter a name and that's the end of it. so far as keeping that as the legend, see the above for the game.
there is no playing as a legend.
