For some pads you will need to set them to dance mod. This can be done differently depending on your converter. Check stepmaina.com for more help on that. Other converters do NOT suport dance mode. The radioshack converter (which is easy to find) does NOT work with dance pads! When I try to start the screen just black out and doesn't run!
Make sure you have the most up-to-date video and sound drivers.
Worse case: re-install SM. I'm stuck in Free Mode!!!
Press F3 untill it's bad to the mode you need

Well I don't know if this will help you but try with this
- In control panel select game devices
- Maybe there exist the option to disable axis mapping
So with this u can press up + down at the same time
