Think about it, if humans discovered intelligent life, you can bet we'd try to go at least try to check them out. It's fun to think about in a fantasy/Sci-Fi nerdgasm sort of way - They may have made first contact with earth when we weren't nearly as advanced as we are now, and they've just been keeping an eye on us. There could very well be SOME sort of strange truth to some of the ancient cultural references to extra terrestrials
