Capcom stole so much from SNK it's not even funny anymore.
SF only got credit because it got out there first. KoF did much more to revolutionize the fighting genre than SF could ever hope to accomplish.
MI was a cop out so they could make more titles, I will admit but they kind of had to because of microsofts demands.
With repetition comes mediocrity eventually unless that same stuff is so different/original people will demand more to play more of the same. Sadly, KoF just became another 2-D fighter among a zillion others.
That and real 3-D fighters started muscling in. (Soul Caliber, Virtua Fighter, Tekken)
The 2-D fighter is dying. Ask any fan. Smash doesn't into this because it technically isn't a "fighting game" but more of a "party brawler".
