Office 2007 is a terrible excuse for an office suite. I haven't even bothered to try Outlook 2007 (seeing as Word 2007 and Excel 2007 piss me off just trying to print from them in my school's Computer labs). Ive used every single version of Office since Windows 3.1, and Office 2003 is by far the best version. Office 2003 breaks compatibility with earlier versions, has less features, takes longer to do things in, and is designed to tailor to a group of people who think that they sit in front of a computer. The reason Office 2007's menu system is broken is because it was designed on an Operating system who's menu system is broken. Ribbon is a terrible excuse for a UI, isn't customizable enough, and needlessly destroys compatibility with I would say, several Terabytes of Microsoft Office documents made since Microsoft Word for MS DOS was around. And for anyone who's used Office in the past 10 years (oh say, nearly every fucking person who's used a computer in that time) Office 2007 is a fresh new and exciting way to frustrate themselves because all the buttons have moved. Microsoft needs to stop trying to be cool and just get things done. It works better that way. Ironically, the things I like the most about Vista aren't the things that make Vista look cool, their the things that make me more productive when I sit in front of it. Office 2007 makes me less productive. I know where almost all the controls are in Office 2003 thanks to a 1 semester class I had to take in College, even before that I knew where most of the functions were. I also kept the book from that class because its an excellent reference for people who don't absorb information instantly. There's no need to break the past 20 years because you're trying to get a bunch of Mac users happy. The main problem here is the UI for Office 2007 was developed by Mac programmers who have to come up with workarounds for a UI that's outdated, outclassed, and unable to effectively grow with the needs of tomorrow. The reason .docx is a failure is because it doesn't support everything .doc does. An open Document format that actually does what we've been doing for the past 20 years will be required to take office to the Write Once Read Anywhere level. Sacrificing Compatibility and a UI for this kind of stuff isn't acceptable in any way. Remember how pissed we were when Konami did DDR Extreme USA? Its the exact same thing, except this time its affecting people who write papers (which is just about everybody), instead of people who play music games (us).
tl;dr: Office 2007 blows big chunks. Wake up, get a clue, go out and buy Office 2003. | I agree with that except what is in the bold.
I find OpenOffice better than 07 really |
