Back before i transfered colleges I played DND 3.5E all the time with my friends. Some of the time people came up with really good campaign settings and lore, though usually we created characters for battling only and did random encounters with no RP. It was fun getting to test out broken as hell characters (one of my friends made a character that dual-wielded throwing daggers and could throw 16 in a single round, each one adding his dex AND int to damage).
I've tried out 4E for a bit. I like how they made character creation and battle much simpler for beginning players, but I don't like how they made every class practically identical to any other. Characters don't feel unique anymore which kills the RP for me, especially with the skill change =\
