MIDI is literally a digital music sheet/score, which your computer takes the role of the instrument and performer. the sound of completely dependant on your computer's sound card, or instrument libraries.

You'd be surprised to know that most of today's PC created music uses MIDI in one way or another.

Also, most of Rockband and Guitar Hero's notecharts are in fact, written in MIDI.
