I'm actually doing a paper that touches somewhat on this topic. All the major record labels have been losing a very noticeable amount of money from lack of album sales for around a decade, thanks to internet filesharing. Their response is to attack >everything< in sight. At one point, the CEO of UMG actually called all iPod users thieves.
They don't want to adapt to our changing society and it will eventually make them implode.
