There's several fanless designs (with space to add a fan) that work really well. The AC Accelero's are pretty popular choices for gpu cooling and they're cheap.

I've also seen people add fans with some little metal clips or zip ties to these for better performance.

Newegg doesn't list it as compatible with the 48xx series, but AC's website does, so I'd assume you'd be fine with that.

Zalman also has a similar cooler, but it's all copper. It's also like $55...

Replacing the cooler is fairly simple too. Unscrew the old cooler, remove, clean the gpu of any residue left over, install new cooler (possibly with better thermal grease than what comes on it), and enjoy.
