Default Desktop Arcade ASC not working in USB

Last week I tried running some Pop'n on my PC for the first time. It started up fine but I couldn't get my Desktop Arcade ASC to calibrate properly. Was using the Radioshack 26-729 adapter but I was always getting at least one button that wouldn't register. In the Pop'n calibration settings, it would always say "right rudder up currently pressed". Tried to change the controller properties in XP, but I couldn't do anything to fix it. The X/Y-axis would always be pressed in one direction.

I've heard that DA ASC's have problems with the Radioshack adapters and that the Super Joy Box 3's should fix it. So today I got a Joy Box 3 but now I'm not getting any response at all from the controller. My PS1 digital Namco stick and IIDX KOC work fine with it but none of the ASC buttons are registering.

Messed with all the possible driver settings too (digital, analog, DDR, etc.) and I don't know what else to try. Any ideas? Has anyone here successfully used a DA ASC with USB? Not sure what version ASC I have, but I know it's not the newer v4's.
