Question Death of the soft pad?

I hope I'm not the only person here who's not hardcore enough to own a pair of CFs (or my own arcade machine)...

Recently I've been hearing a bunch of complaints about Ignition 3.0s. I've known a few people who bought them and had very bad experiences. I got to play on a pair and it was, uh, awkward (I swear I got 10-15 pad misses on one song). I think there have also been some people who had good experiences, but the fact remains that Red Octane is apparently no longer the soft pad leader it once was.

That said, who IS the soft pad leader now? I don't really know of any other soft pad makers except MadCatz (ugh!) and MyMyBox (who I have no other knowledge of whatsoever). Is it impossible to get halfway decent soft pads now? Has anyone tried another manufacturer's pads and had good results?

I ask in part because I just want to know, but also because I was clinging to the hope of getting one of the home DDR mixes, and hard pads won't really be feasible for me for another year (right now I move around a lot). So please don't tell me I'm a deluded fool and there's no hope left for good DDR pads under $300...

(I swear, I thought this post was going to be more concise. Grrr.... )
