Dealing with the interior of an Explorer guitar isn't hard, really. Just take it slow, take a cell phone picture or two if you need to remember where things go (you won't actually move but a few screws and maybe 1-2 pieces to get to the button board anyway) and you'll be on your way. To me, it sounds like one of the rubber pads underneath the button got folded up somehow or slid and is causing perpetual contact. It happened to a friend of mine's guitar and I just had to open it up, take the buttons off, reseat the pad, bam, done.
