Default Sharing a drive between two computers

After being stuck in the stone age for years, I am finally getting a new HP computer. It's got an Intel Quad-Core CPU, 4 GB RAM, 640GB HDD, 512 MB ATi Radeon GPU, and a Lightscribe DVD+/-RW Drive, along with 64-bit Vista Home Premium. I'll be getting the free Windows 7 upgrade when it releases.

So anyway, I've cleaned up my old computer, and will be moving it downstairs when the new one arrives. It'll still be connected to my LAN network, though. And there are some files on the old PC I want to transfer to the new one.

My question is this: What is the safest way to set up folder sharing between only two computers? I want each computer to have access to the other's C: drive, but I don't want any other PCs connected to the network to be able to access either computer's C: drive.

The old PC has an AMD Sempron 3000+ Processor (1.8 GHz I believe), 768 MB RAM, and XP SP3 (32-bit), if it really matters.

EDIT: And if this Vista/XP sharing thing won't work over LAN, will I be able to transfer files between the two PCs by connecting them directly via Ethernet?
