I don't know how to completely hide a networked drive from certain computers, but if you don't want other people to poke around the drive, you could always put a password on it when you turn on sharing.
As for directly sharing (without a hub/router), you'll need a crossover cable. If you're savvy enough, you could make one yourself. If not, you can buy it really cheap from here.
