No shit. Without the judgment display, you can't tell how accurate or in sync you are with the rest of the song.

Using as much sudden+ as possible without inhibiting your reading or timing ability. It's easiest to do this in Gold CS and beyond since the green numbers informs you of how much time there is between the note showing up to when it reaches the bottom of the screen.
Speed mods are also important. Although I'm content with the S+ green text being between 253 and 256, HS 2.5 on a 150 BPM song is going to do more good than HS 2 under the same conditions. If you're aiming for timing, S+ and speed mod settings are of critical importance.
