Bullshit, I'd say just the opposite is true. I passed my first couple 12s before I could AAA consistently (had less than 5)
Aside from that I pretty much agree with your post. Although I don't really think random is that important for timing. In fact, starting out I would definitely suggest not using it while you're getting a feel for timing. You don't need anything else to divide your attention before you have a firm grasp on where your timing window is/ how to zero in on it.
Random has certainly helped my passing/combo ability, but I don't really see it being super helpful with timing.
