I looked around and couldn't find any, but the impression I get is that it would be very difficult to try and implement this with a Greasemonkey script. Maybe a plug-in could do it, but I'm not familiar with Firefox plug-in development.

No, it shouldn't be included. It should be excluded from IE, so that everyone can see the same thing. Then we wouldn't have these silly problems.
