instead this is what i did to get a couple custom cars to work:

the vehicle itself goes here:
TrackMania Nations ESWC\GameData\Skins\Vehicles\StadiumCar

The layer files go here:
TrackMania Nations ESWC\GameData\Painter\Layers\StadiumCar

worth noting that you do not need to unzip any files, and it should appear selectable in the profile menu upon startup
