Only a few licensed songs... and to be honest I wouldn't have been worse without Kylie Minogue (who also made an appearance in the later Dancing Stage Fusion). However the KONAMI original selection remains great even though it encompasses the first DDR mixes. The players will find many songs well-known throughout the Bemani world, for example B4U (considered by many to be the anthem for the DDR series), Holic, Wild Rush, Paranoia and the fast-paced Drop Out, that may be considered as the Boss Song for this mix. Songs get unlocked gradually as you play, one song for every five played, the last unlockable song being AM-3P (303 Bass Mix). Overall, you get 51 songs to play with. And for those who feel like it, you can even play the Solo charts (6-panel play) included with some songs!
Every song has Basic / Trick / Maniac charts with ratings from 1 to 9. The scoring system is similar to the one used on the older DDR mixes, with a score depending on the maximum number of notes that can be hit, and a grading system that might be weird for those used to DDRMAX's rating: A = Full Combo, AA = all perfects, the rest is B or C or D depending on your accuracy. (I managed to get only one AA, on The Bad Touch Basic

)
The graphics themselves (interface, BG random animations etc...) may appear outdated, yet remain decent. Actually, the interface for this game is based upon the Japanese DDR 4th mix. After all, it's only a PS1 game, do not forget it.
In the end, DSPE remains suitable for those who want to begin, or for those who feel like re-living the good ol' times. It might be hard to find on your regular store, but you'll have more chance to find it on the Internet... and for a nice price too!
