I can't compare it to any other rhythm game; It's pretty much created a new style within itself.
Despite what people think it really does require rhythm, and the songs do affect the beats that up. It's got the same basic concept of any othe rhythm game, timing your beats according to the music.
It really is worth the 30$. It's loads a fun and there's a lot to unlock. It's very addicting, and you'll be hooked on it until you beat it, for sure.
