honestly you're just going to have to learn trial and error. if you are trying to do a song that is not electronic (something that was played live) you really aren't going to be able to find a constant bpm. if it IS electronic, use some kind of tool like mixmeister's and adjust it manually until it's right

Tap your feet. Ancient method but it works for doctors to count your pulse. Rely on it.

I was about to suggest that when I scrolled down and saw it... lol
This is a useful program:
Bpm Taper 2004 0.1.0 - Tap the space bar to a 1/4 beat rhythm to calculate the bpm

Also, if you have FL Studio, you can use the Tap tool by right-clicking on the BPM meter and clicking Tap. It finds the BPM by calculating the distance between your mouse clicks.

if you use DDream Studio and your mouse has a scroll, you can use it to accurately get the BPM

once you get the correct gap, use Ctrl+(Mousewheel) to expand and compress the beats until you get the correct BPM (waveforms matches with blue lines)

Waveforms analysis aren't always accurate, as music with speech and or foley sounds aren't really that easy to analyse. If any of you have E4 for the 360 you'll know how weird the beat detection for waveforms is. Get a program that can record your taps as well as do a waveform/segment/peak analysis. That's your best bet.

tapping to the song is still the most accurate, it's not often you'll find licensed songs with wild BPMs and/or crazy beats. The only one that comes to mind now is... Franz Ferdinan's... I couldn't remember the song name... But it was in GH1. XD

umm mixmeister does sometimes work...it depends on the song? ><

There's also Dancing Gorillas or Monkey's but i can't find it anymore so I'm not sure if it even exists anymore.

I use TorQ and XPonent to find the BPMs of songs. It's really good but also about $500.00.

Mind you it does a little more than just find BPMs.

And you can also Shift+mousewheel to slide all the beats to help you find the gap.

Note: You need to put in beats before you can mess with them, use autofill and put in a reasonable BPM to get some beats to work with.

OP, are you asking this because you intend to make a simfile out of it? If that's true then I would recommend that you ask in there. Let us know in this thread if that's what you want and we'll (or I will) move it to that forum for you. I think the simfile makers would have a lot to say about this issue.
