Standby Flying

Does anyone know a lot about doing this? What times to fly/what airlines will do it without having a reservation ticket?

I'm thinking about AirTran's X-fares thing, but then I'd have to leave on the 6th.

I think that if you're going to fly standby the best flights for it would probably be redeyes? I don't think alot of people go on those flights so I'm sure there are tons of empty seats.

Yeah, I'd say be prepared to go to the airport really freaking early, like 3am/4am, and wait for hours to hopefully get on a flight. :/ Good luck with that, Riji.

The problem with orbitz and other opaque bidding services like that are that there's no recourse in the event of a fuckup on their part. Additionally, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a shitty flight because these are the flights that no one wants to take, that's how they get them so cheap. If you don't have any schedule as far as what time of day you want to depart and how long your layovers are, then it's not bad, but if you have any kind of itinerary these places are right out.

Even the AirTran thing I found is kind of shitty. You have to pay $69 at each stop you have. The prices just weren't in my price range so I think I might end up skipping. D:

Did anyone end up doing this? My brother is leaving for basic training (Marines( in 20 days, and I'm going to 'loan' him the money to take a flight and visit some girl he's in love with in SC. Kind of my last chance to do something nice for him, but uh, I'm also really cheap. If you have any tips on this or other cheap flight options lemme know.
