Default Catcher in the Rye

J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye: pillar of contemporary American literature, an ungodly and filthy rag, or just whiny bullshit?

People ban it in some places because it's explicit and because Holden curses and because it has adult themes. It shows how ignorant they are because, like it or not, the story is much deeper.

I invite you to share your thoughts. Yes, you.

Whiny bullshit. When I get home and find my copy I can come up with specific examples, but... The author tried to be clever, and make Holden's hyporocies and flaws subtle. Didn't work. Having him be the only real character with any depth (if you can call a mess of contradictions and angsty teen confusion depth) doesn't help it much.

It's not perticularly well written (using the first-person narration as an excuse, I'm sure) and not very enjoyable, so from a purely entertainment standpoint it's still trash.

I loved the book, but maybe it's just me. I really do.
The story itself was a bit confusing, I had to read it over twice just to see if I understood the first time I read it through.
A great book, but many people do not like it for reasons as to it having an adult theme to it and him having problems mentally.
My 10th grade teacher gave us an assignment, which was to read a book and make a summary out of it and whatnot.
Well, I told her I was going to read it, and she was saying "No, no, no, it contains things you shouldn't be reading!"...heh.
I did it anyways and got a crappy B on the assignment, oh well.

Ah, for as long as humans exist, there is always going to be those whiny assholes who think they know what is best for EVERYONE (Ooooh, look at me I'm SO smart......blah,blah).

I need to read this book, I only know about it because they quoted it in
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Kinda sad.....T-T

An absolute classic. Holden is (to me) a depper character than one would initially think. True, he's an outspoken teen but he also has some compassion. The last time I read the book was in 11th grade in high school (I got a C on my presentation because my teacher hated the book, so I was doomed before I even began) so I'll keep my opinions to myself lest I totally screw up something. I still think the book is a classic.

It got me all hot and bothered at some points.

I seriously thought he was going to get violently raped by Oldwhatshisface after he got back from that date.

I liked it. It was easy an easy read that alot of people can talk and relate to.

I found it mostly enjoyable, but at the rate I was forced to read it in (Under 1 week) I had less time to really enjoy it.

You guys are all crazy. Seriously. How can anyone like that book? It's like reading a really whiny kid's Live Journal but with less emoticons.

And now my pun-addled mind just came up with a community of whiners and freaks attracted to the book...
