After having completed The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in the first late-night marathon in a long time, I have this to say about it: I couldn't help but compare the show to many others while I was watching it, including:- Evangelion (textual introduction in the beginning of episode 5)
- X/1999 (end of the world; battles within "closed space" disconnected from the physical world)
- The Big-O (Nagato reminded me too much of Dorothy for me to ignore this)
- Galaxy Angel (Vanilla too)
- Tsuki-Hime (Asakura had a knife and destroyed the environment on a whim)
- House, M.D. (last episode of season 2) (the climax was a dream/hallucination)
- Eva-freaking-gelion (re-creating the world idealistically)
I wish I could take elements of popular shows, incorporate them into my own ideas and get away with it.
Also, I wasn't satisfied with the ending. Too many three-year periods of time and supernatural abilities left unexplained.

It's just that I'm familiar with Yuki Matsuoka's (Osaka, Azumanga Daioh; Tsuruya, Haruhi Suzumiya) range (to use an example), so this doesn't surprise me. Nothing does these days.

I'm still quite surprised at Hirano's real voice though. Unexpectedly high. And she's still in University too. Either that or I'm too naive then.

Which is exactly why I think Haruhi is nothing new, if not for the somewhat original story. I enjoyed it only as much as I did any other show I thought was good when I first saw it, but it doesn't hold the same kind of position in me than it apparently does several other users here.

I've still never made it past episode 2 of Haruhi. I just don't see the greatness in the series that everyone does, I suppose. It doesn't help that Haruhi herself is an ass who only cares about herself. | |

It's not played out of order as I first thought. It just has a discontigous continuity starting at episode 2, interspersed with Fumoffu-style anecdotes throughout. The thing with multiple continuities is that one continuity usually explains or clarifys discrepancies of the other. This one does not in any respect. It's still up to you.

They basically just animated the first book.
I'm actually more interested in what's going to show up this Fall. Summer always seems to be filled with your shojo harem shows and comedies while Fall tends to have the more serious action shows and the bigger releases.
I understand that Gundam Seed 3 will be airing this Fall and that makes me angry and sad so very much. Worst Gundam series ever and I normally love Gundam ;_;

Actually I'm reading the manga, anime seems rushed. More like an OVA or something

But overall its a rather sweet and nice anime so go watch it. | |
