The Grammies have to nominate bands that the general populace is actually aware of, and metal isn't as mainstream-popular nowadays as it was in its heydey.

Yeah, there's better stuff out there. That isn't the singular criteria that these guys are working with.

Dragonforce.

DRAGONFORCE
Slipknot ain't really metal. Dragonforce ain't real. Ministry's song was a cover from days long past. That leaves Metallica versus Priest.

My Apocalypse sounded like a watered-down version of their old MoP/RtL days. Nostradamus (the song) sounded like a symphonic version of Painkiller.

Here's to hoping for Nostradamus. But yeah, Slipknot and Dragonforce are appalling to be nominated for best anything.

I haven't listened to Nostradamus (neither song nor album). Should I?

I'd say give the song a listen. Album is a bit overlong, though. Disc one, though, has some pretty kick-ass moments on it (Persecution, Plague and Pestilence, Death, Prophecy). The album ain't Painkiller Part 2, it's too mellow overall for that. It's not bad, though.

Why are some of these songs being nominated now? I know a few of these are at least a couple years old.

Harder Better Faster Stronger is being nominated for the "Alive 2007" version, not the "Discovery" version

which was still released in 2007 so IDK why it's being nominated in 2008

I'm ridiculously surprised MGMT is not on there for best dance anything, and I'm kind of surprised to not see Senses Fail either (I figure they're at least bigger than The Mars Volta)

Oh well, at least I have a few things to root for

It's probably for the same reason that Blackout got nominated this year rather than Circus: it was released too late in 2007 to be eligible for last year's Grammys.

All I have to ask is... why are the Jonas Brothers up for New Artist? They rleased their first cd THREE years ago... isn't a new artist one who JUST released their first, not their third?

More interestingly, why is Duffy up as a "new artist?"

She's, you know... Hillary Duff. Free of Disney. But not new at all.

That'd be like saying Heaven And Hell is a new band.
