Pretty much, the best Kanji resource out there is this book: Amazon.com: Kanji & Kana Revised Edition: A Guide to the Japanese Writing System (Tuttle Language Library): Wolfgang Hadamitzky, Mark Spahn: Books

It's from the Tuttle language library, and it was required for my High School Japanese classes and my collegiate level Japanese classes. It's incredibly easy to use too, as well as having a very well laid out section about learning hiragana and katakana.

As for working on the language, try finding a Japanese phrasebook and a Japanese-English dictionary. If you take a Japanese class in school, you'd be pretty much required to have them, however they're just nice resources.

I don't know if this'll be any help at all, but to my surprise, I saw that they're releasing a Japanese tutor game for the DS. It'll probably be a budget title, but I have no idea if it'll be any good or not.

Ubisoft's publishing it, I think.

If you're interested, a Nintendo DS game that teaches you Japanese is coming out in the near future (as well as French, English, Spanish and German versions).

EDIT: Ah.. should've read page 2 =P
