Has anyone heard it? They took their sound way back like how it used to. It seemed like a cross between And Justice For All and The Black Album coupled with some riffs from Load and Reload sped up. Too bad I don't see their album being sold here in the Philippines! | |

Drums, while better than St. Anger, are still too goddamn loud and sound horrendous. And Lars is still off-time way too often.
Hetfield's voice sucks. No two ways about that.
This is not a "return to form," this is an old, tired, washed-up band attempting to rehash what made them famous in the first place to make a few more bucks.
That said, a couple of the songs (notably the first two) are okay, but everything done here is done twice as well on Ride The Lightning.

I think it won't compare to their self-titled album, or ...And Justice for All (I still can't get the riffs on One off my head).

Oh, and by the way, the mixing job is absolutely atrocious.
Observe the waveform analysis of Cyanide: 
No dynamic range whatsoever. This is a fairly accurate view of the whole album, as well. Just one gigantic mess of clipping and distortion. Apparently, they're even rioting on the official Metallica message boards, starting an online petition for a remix/remaster of the album that doesn't suck.
Now, Metallica never really excited me. Ride The Lightning is a dang good album, no doubt, but that's all. Even so, the songs on Death Magnetic really aren't that bad, and even I want to kill Rick Rubin for this hackjob. They stuck poor Ted Jensen in front of mastering it, but even he apologized and said there was nothing he could do with the tapes he was given.
So songwriting-wise, this may be Metallica's best album in the past 20 years... but the recording process was an absolute disaster. Such a thing should not have happened to a band of their notoriety.

They've seemed to went downhill sadly 
But it's not a major loss (since there are other deathmetal rock songs out there)
