So. Let's be honest here: I'm a fan of the Evangelion series. (Not a drooling fanboy, because frankly, I can't stand more than one episode. But a fan.) Even I'm worried about how this is going to end up... am I the only person in that boat?

Original ending: Fucked up.
EoE ending: Totally, absolutely fucked up.
Rebirth ending: Completely, unbelievably fucked up beyond all imagination?
If that happens I must see it just to see how this is possible.

For the 4 new movies in japan, it sounds like 3 of the movies are just going to be a retelling of the original story, but in a new way. Kind of like what they did for the Gundam and Z gundam movies. It is the last movie that sounds like it should be intersting. A new prequel. I wonder if they would go back in time to tell the story of what happen leading up to the events of second impact in more detail, or perhaps even go father back then that.

From what I could understand, these "new films" are some kind of remake of the original series.

It can probably safely be asssumed as dead and/or very, very tired after a long squak.

They said back then that in the fall of this year we should be hearing some big news about the movie. Here is a like to the info plus the rest of the interview. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untitle...ect#Production
There is some pretty intersting stuff about the movie in the interview. I guess Weta gets more e-mails about the eva project then they do about Lord of the Rings. The Robin Willimans bit was pretty cool too.

(I'm also willing to bet that Manga will once again pull more shit by once again making it matted widescreen and doing all these extra unnecessary soundtracks!)

I love Evangelion, yes, even to the point where I fell for the ridiculously arbitrary merchandise (I own a soap dish shaped like a bathtub with Misato in it holding a beer), however, I couldn't even begin to imagine the many possible ways this could insanely fail. And sadly, the bad scenarios are definitely starting to outweight the possible good outcomes. And the things that strike my mind are:
1) What Story Will They Use?
- Are they just going to bust a "Evangelion: Death" and just show the entire storyline in 2-3 hours? (I'm aware that "Death" was more than just a recap of the entire story, but come on, that's what it is.)
Outcome: Fans will understand, others like "the fuck is this?", this is just going to be too much too fast.
- Will they separate the story and make it a trilogy or something? The story is too complex to fit into a single movie, some say.
Outcome: Unless they can get a GREAT plot, non-fans will not be patient.
- Just End of Evangelion?
Outcome: Yeah, go ahead, watch End of Evangelion before the series itself. Or you could just get some acid and hang in your bud's basement and look at a disco ball. Just as confused and wierded out, but without leaving the comfort of someone's home.
2) Maintaining Canon.
- Keep it primarily Japanese?
Japanese names, Locations, references? The majority of it took place in Japan, most of the characters were Japanese, and etc.
Outcome: Change it, fans will revolt. Keep it, non-fans will just be like "Oh it's just some Japanimation thing. Eh" And I don't think WETA at all wants that.
Casting!
- Known actors? Let's not start, we don't even know. Japanese characters = Japanese actors? Changing names = different races, etc?
Outcome: Pretty much like above.
- Appearance: Rei's blue hair, Misato's purple hair, Ritsuko's sexy ass everything? (Sorry, but it's Ritsuko) among other things?
Pretty much the ultimate outcome: Unless ADV and WETA make it the best movie ever made:
Change it: Fans will go nuts.
Keep it: Non-Fans will just go WTF.
When I first heard about an Eva movie being made, I was giggling like a little schoolgirl. For about 1 week. Then worries hit me. Like graduating from High School, it's awesome IN THEORY.
In theory, Communism works.
When you get into the details, THEN it hits you. School: Oh fuck, where do I go from here. Eva movie: Oh fuck, what do we do about *ANYTHING!*?
I'm so pessimistic about this, I'm actually hoping it doesn't make it anywhere past the intial idea stages. It's very, very, VERY safe to say that the Neon Genesis Evangelion live-action movie is in Development Hell. It's in a rut, they're pretty much going nowhere with it. ADV and WETA stopped just in time to think "Woah, wait a fucking minute. This is already looking bad."
I'm already seeing something like this with a show on ABC called "Ugly Betty". Pretty stupid name, eh? Follow me with this one...
This is not just based off of, but it's essentially the American adaptation of a hit Mexican television show called "Betty la Fea" (Ugly Betty in English. WOAH.) I'll save you the bulk of the plot (ugly dorky girl has crush on rich pretty guy at work, pretty girls bully her, she gets guy, she ends up actually being cute). Now in Mexico, this works because of originality (somewhat, I'm not going to bother) and spanish in-jokes (society, play on words and common phrases). The ABC version is (I think) produced by Salma Hayek. Before even airing it's pretty much getting the "What the shit is this" treatment by fans of the original living in the U.S. Why? First off, this came out of the blue. Add to that location changes and not maintaining enough canon of the Mexican version, you pretty much have something that's already being given the thumbs down by fans of the original, and thanks to the odd (at least to the U.S.) name and plot, may not be well recieved by new viewers.
How much of a hit the American version will be remains to be seen. But this is pretty much the type of scenario Evangelion faces. Replace "Mexico to America" with "Anime fans to mainstream media" and "Spanish to English" with "Japanese Animated to English Live-Action".
All of this goes without saying:
If it does end up making it to the big screen, you'll bet your sweet ass I'll be as close to first in line to see it as possible. With my NERV shirt on. With my friend's laptop to watch the series on DVD. And yes, with my Misato soap dish.
Only Pen-Pen could save this movie from certain doom, from the fan's side or from the new viewers, we'll just have to see.

Manga Entertainment is quite possibly the company most on my shit list in all of American anime releases, to be honest, just because they snagged the two films and gave them a weak translation job, at first (fun fact: when the beginner Japanese student is finding mistakes in what's on the screen, something is off), and then prevented me from getting my goddamn re-releases along with the other "Platinum" (yes, I know overseas it's "Renewal", but I go by what my copies are marked) discs.
Have those guys put out anything SINCE EoE, to be honest? I can't name a single other Manga Entertanment product. (Truly ironically, I can't name a single manga release from them, either.)
As for the live action: so far, it's the only project that I know has Anno's name in the crew for it. If nothing else, it will be a camp classic for the ages, but I can almost guarantee I'll find a way to enjoy it.

I'm actually happy that they lost the rights to Wings of Honneamise cause of the terrible job that they did. I've been trying to find a inexpensive R2 release that I could subtitle myself to watch cause of the shit job they did overall. Hell, I'm still pissed that ADV made their DVDs 480i when the Japanese DVDs were 480p!
