If not, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a really dark movie, but the story was good nonetheless. http://panslabyrinth.com

Think "Adult Fairy Tale".
Its sad how the only good movies anymore, are those that are on the other side of the world and away from hollywood.
Question for those of you who have seen it : So did she die, or did she go to her paradise? I believe she just died and the entire fantasy was in her mind. At the very end, when the Captain sees her in the ruins, talking to the fawn, she is just talking to herself. *Some of us were discussing this after the movie*

Guillermo del Toro said he made the film so it was open for interpretation, so there's no definite answer. At first, I completely thought it was all in her mind because of the end, but after reading some others' views, I'm more in the middle. If the fairy tale aspects weren't real, how did she get in the general's room without the aid of the chalk? Although on the other side, nobody else saw the fairy tale aspects. The mandrake root could have easily been some random thing or another plant root. Her mother gave no indication of hearing it scream in the fire.
I could go on, but as I said before, there's no definite answer, so it's not really necessary.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | More plot discussion: Spoilers Obviously While there might not be any "absolutely definite anwser", I feel it still hints at the whole idea of "fantasy is fantasy". Purely blind faith in something, only to be shattered by a harsh reality. The idea of a happy magical ending just doesn't fit right with me, and the feel throughout the entire movie seems to agree with me.
In a sense it contains both a happy ending and a tragic ending. The girl died happy, within her own paradise. Whether that is real or not to anyone else, it is real to her. When you pull back and examine their reality, it was probably all just a fantasy, but she still found happiness even in death. Hope even in darkness, etc...

reminded me of Mirror Mask...with a much much darker tone. The main bad guy was just ruthless.
Saw a trailer for it the other day and it was nice but i hope parents arent taking young kids to this, its definately a more mature title.
Any chance they'll dub it?

As far as if she really died or not, clearly she died. That much isn't really up for debate considering that she stops breathing and Mercedes begins crying uncontrollably. As for whether or not the fantasy events really happened or not, I think that it was all in her mind. You never really see how she gets into the Captain's quarters, it's simply inferred that she uses the chalked door to get in, and the encounter with the guy who had the eyeballs in his hands could've been completely imagined. None of the adults ever see the key that she carried back from the tree, either. I personally think that it was all the work of an overactive imagination of a young child and that she died lost in her world of make believe.

Dark~Hope, don't watch The Messengers. The Pangs have better work in the form of Thai films.
