Hey, Transformers was surprisingly not sucky. This, though...
I don't mind the CGI. I don't mind the casting (or what we know of it now). I don't even particularly mind the promo poster. What I DO mind is what the target audience is inevitably going to be. Young children, as in the under 10 crowd. The problem is that these movies are trying to work off nostalgia, but the kids they're targeting are too young to appreciate that. The people who would appreciate the nostalgia, meanwhile, are too old for the audience and do not have kids old enough to enjoy the movie with them.
Transformers worked because they made the action intense enough for the nostalgic crowd, while keeping it safe for the kids who would be experiencing Transformers for the first time. Any attempts to do the same to the Chipmunks or Underdog would be doomed to look downright ridiculous. But updating the series to keep in tune with the same age group as the old target audience would only bastardize the series. In short, a lose-lose situation.
So basically, it's too early for Underdog and the Chipmunks to get "nostalgic" films. It would be much better to wait until the original audience of those series got old enough to have kids that matched the target audience. Oh yeah, and keeping Disney away would be a must.
NOSTALGIA. SERIOUS BUSINESS.
