It is indeed pretty amusing, though Helena Bonham Carter's singing leaves much to be desired (ie: she does not enunciate and her voice is quite weak). The movie was obviously done with the intent of acting being the focus, though, but I still wish then had gotten a few actual singers to voice over the main actors at relevant points. I suppose Johnny Depp was a decent singer, nonetheless. The kid who played Toby impressed me greatly, though.
I meant to go see the broadway version of the musical, but it didn't happen because of schooling.

It's interesting how Alan Rickman (Judge Turpin)'s voice remains almost exactly the same when he sings. I've no problem with it, it just struck me as peculiar. Of course there was definite room for improvement though. As far as acting though, I felt the characters were portrayed brilliantly.

Still, the film when real well and thus represents what Johnny Depp can really do.

The soundtrack really could have been better... it's okay. Some great moments, some kind of strange ones. Toby's voice is amazing, though.

Seriously, why is a ten year-old kid the best voice in the entire thing? Don't get me wrong, Depp can sing, but... he's not that great. And Helena Bonham Carter only got that role because she's sleeping with the director (no really she is). That must be it because my god is she shrill.

Also Toby was great, especially the last scene, where he cuts Sweeney's throat, he looked dead.

I love this film. I saw the play years ago, and when I heard Burton was remaking it I was way excited. While it isn't perfect, Burton did a fantastic job really making it his own. Amazing, amazing movie.

That must be it because my god is she shrill. | Probably because there's no guarantee of finding a super-good actor to play someone that age, and Toby's part required relatively little acting? Also, I'm pretty sure the actor who played him was older than that; in one of the standing shots, it looked like he was taller than Helena Bonham Carter. I would say he's at least 12.
Also, I think the person who played Lucy was from the Broadway, but she was an insane old women and was supposed to sound that way. So she pulled that off well, but we don't get a concept of whether or not she can actually sing.
Edit: Ed Sanders (actor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Apparently he's 15!
