Don't forget Dai no Daibouken, the Dragon Warrior anime (f**k that "Quest" thing  ). Though only thing it had in common with the games were the monsters, the storyline was completely independant.

What they released here was just a handful of episodes from the first series, which was based on Dragon Quest 3.
The reason it's not called Dragon Quest here (aside from recent games) is because of conflicts with an old pen and paper RPG of the same name.
