I want to know prices before I consider getting one though. Actually, one of my friends bought a banjo during the summer break. Surprisingly, it cost £190...I'd expect the shamisen to be a lot higher though.

Depends. I'm looking at one on ebay right now that would cost you approx. £65... granted, it's a bit used, and there's still a day left in auction, but if you want a deal... you just have to look.

Of course, that's generally how it works for most musical instruments. No matter the type, you can usually find a model for only a couple hundred US dollars, and they'll generally go up to a couple thousand. There are always exceptions, naturally, but that seems to be the ranges for most instruments.

Personally, I'd kind of like to learn how to play violin... maybe I'll go for one of those models Dewgy bought a while back. They're pretty cheap.

although it is electric, cheap violins are incredibly bad. the string height is often much too high and they just generally sound bad. it would make it more difficult for you to learn.

in my opinion, the only violins that good are 1000+ and go into the 10000's.

Aha, I've found a starter kit (shamisen, extra strings, couple of picks, finger grip and tutorial booklet [in Japanese, of course...]) for £220 without shipping. Good.

Don't knock the banjo :O

I love the banjo. Check out Bela Fleck [and the Flecktones]

Shamisen

Hmm........

I guess that's the instrument that the Yoshida Brothers use?

Very cool sounding instrument

Plus, it produces a very nice pitch (every time I hear it).

Very cool instrument in my opinion

I was just looking at shamisens on ebay yesterday! god I want one so bad. There's a very good koto and shamisen teacher in New York I'd like to study with if I had the money. I want to learn koto too, but shamisen seems like it would be a little bit easier to carry around =/ I think I might try getting a koto if I'm in Japan though.

When/if I get one, I'll have to self-tutor. It's a little difficult finding specialist shamisen players in the middle of England.

Then the same also applies to here in the Philippines.

Heck, you'd be lucky if you can find someone who teaches the Alto-Saxophone here.
