Xe-None: "Decay Dance"

Industrial Dance Metal. www.xe-none.com for free download of everything they've released thus far.

Band styles:
-Industrial guitar riffs
-Black Metal-style male vocals
-Dance-style female vocals
-Trancey synth
-Drums that go all over the spectrum.

AND IT WORKS. Seriously, these guys get the Ribos seal of approval.

Hearing your description was off-putting but now that I listened to several tracks I can safely say that I was correct in calling bullshit on this band from the start.

I mean, I guess this is listenable if you liked to mix Static-X with Emperor's last album and had Evanescence produce it. If you want walls of industrial noise mixed with metal minus the shitty trance, try out some Spektr or Striborg.

And even then, if you want some guitar-laden trance, Infected Mushroom has gone that way lately, and its not half as bad as you might think.

Excuse me sir, but are you ASKING FOR A CHALLENGE????!!!!

You seem to miss the fact that the synthy parts do not actually resemble that of a trance song at all. I simple labeled it a trancy synth because it seems to resemble that standard mildly distorted sine/sawtooth wave form that's so popular.

Evanescence does not "produce." They churn out crap, the record label hires a producer to clean it up. That said, I see nothing wrong with clean production in the case of industrial/electronic music. However, since the EP and especially the Demo appear to be self-produced, that's where you're getting the "wall of noise" ideas from. The demo appears to have some rather muddy mastering, so the sounds that should be unique and distinct blend together a little bit.

Much as we all love to hate the nu-metal genre, the truth is that Static-X is not that bad of a band. They can actually write multiple riffs into songs, and sure the lyrics are crap, but the end result is a song full of energy and variance. Shadow Zone's Korn imitations notwithstanding.

Emperor's last album was bullshit. I think we can all agree on that. Problem is, it doesn't share many qualities at all with Xe-None's male vocalist. Emperor's "Prometheus..." used vocals much more reminiscent of Cradle of Filth... irritating shrieking, totally incoherent. Xe-None's male vocals, on the other hand, have a bit more depth to them. More like Venom's. Except fuller sounding. And those male vocals are about the only part that sound vaguely like "Prometheus...".

Haha, no man, it's all good. No challenge!

Actually those synths sound JUST like trance; in fact, the songs I heard wouldn't have grinded my shit so badly if they didn't try to be so "out there"--the electronic scould easily be left out. And I know Evanescence doesn't produce; I was saying that if they did, it would turn out as such.

And yes, Static-X are that bad of a band. Their lyrics are some of the worst suburban preppy white girl rhymes that I've ever heard. I actually saw them in concert years back and they were so incredibly bored on stage; they pre-program all of their electronics beforehand. It was embarrassing for everyone there. They're more or less the Jessica Simpson of the metal world and I hope Wayne Static dies in a fire (no flame pun intended).

And I don't like Emperor's last album one bit, but to compare it to Cradle of Filth is a little harsh, dude. I don't think it merits that kind of criticism, but to each his own.

And to not totally piss you off, I'm loving Altar as well; as anti-Sunn0))) as I am, it's a damn fine record and I put up the $45 for the double LP. I'm dying to track down Rainbow, as well. Michio Kurihara is a favorite of mine. I love me some Boris!

And to not get off topic, a few things I've enjoyed lately:

Orchestra Baobab
The Daktaris
Otomo Yoshihide
Michio Kurihara
Colleen
Krisiun - Conquerors of Armageddon
Method Man - Tical
Robert Fripp & Brian Eno - Equatorial Stars
Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Evanescence doesn't produce... but if they did, that's what it would sound like? Michael Jordon doesn't paint, but could we know what it would look like if he did? You're not making much sense there.

And considering Wayne Static is the one who programs the electronics, it's not surprising they were pre-programmed. Guess what? Most electronics in concerts end up pre-programmed. You deal with it. As for their lyrics, they have a sense of humor. Which is more than, say, Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit can say. "I'm With Stupid" was never meant to be a deep or serious song. Just watch the music video for it. Also, you live in North Carolina. You can't blame Static-X for being bored during the performance. Just kidding. Of course, I'm rather amused by the fact you even bother to call them metal. Because let's face it, they're really not. Song construction is more along the lines of standard rock, just with more distorted guitars.

And for the Emperor album... lol. My point is, you compared Xe-None's male vocal style to that of the Prometheus album, when the vocal style used there is more of the higher-end BM shrieking employed by groups like CoF. Xe-None's vocal stylings, meanwhile, are much deeper, more like Venom.

I'm still trying to figure out why you're anti-Sunn0))). Boris's earlier albums, like Absolutego through Flood (or maybe Megatone, I haven't heard that one) are definitely drone... yet you hate Sunn0))), one of the drone masters. Explain.

And dude... $45 for the double LP? Methinks you got ripped off. I did a quick google search, and AmpCamp.com has it for $15.99. Yes, the double. I know. Limited to 5000 copies and all that. I have it myself.

But indeed. Boris is good stuff.

Speaking of Sunn0)))...

Listening to:
Sunn0))): "Mocking Solemnity"
