Talking The 'What are you reading?!' Thread

Doing a search led me to find nothing, surprisingly enough. I know there have to be those out there who shun the light and crack open a good book! Tell me what you've been enjoying. Myself?

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. One anecdote after another, jabbing and prodding your ribs, this book is both sad and hilarious. One of the most pretentious book titles of all time, sure, but it's well backed. I'm a third of the way through and am enjoying it.

Bone by Jeff Smith. Who knew comic books could be literature?
Just kidding.
This is a wonderfully funny and epic adventure of...well, fuck the synopsis, it wouldn't do it justice. I'm on issue 27 of 55 and I can happily say how proud I am to being addicted to this comic. Move over, Watchmen!

I also recently finished Junji Ito's Uzumaki, another great comic, but of an entirely different world. Highly recommended for the horror manga fans.

Soon after I finish these, I'd like to get onto finishing Aristotle's Poetics, and start Cormac McCarthy's new novel, The Road -- this man is the best living writer in America.

...and you all?

Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal is the finest piece of satire I have yet read, attacking every aspect of the "system" with surgical precision while coming off as one of "them" to accomplish that end.

I've been reading Elizabeth Hayden's The Assassin King for the past few months; school takes up a lot of my reading time and I usually only get to read for ~10 minutes on break at work.

It's book 6 of a fantasy series I started reading in high school. It came out recently so I picked it up.

Erin Hunter's Warrior Series. There's two series to them and there really good and suspenseful. However most people think it's rediculous because it's about cats fighting eachother but it's really good.

Interesting choices, all.

I'm starting to go through old Edgar Allen Poe stories that I enjoy -- The Angel of the Odd is, I think, his best work.

I've also wanted to try and start again with some Dostoevsky; The Brothers Karamzov fell into my hands recently (for $.25 at that), but I've just not been able to stick with it. Ah well.

I'm currently about 70% through Dean Koontz' The Taking. It's a very interesting thriller with a lot of sci-fi elements. The main premise of it is a bit out there in terms of realism (as far as we know...you'll see what I mean if you check it out), but it's more than adequately detailed. Plus the cover's orange, which makes it totally worth it. :P

Personally I prefer the mummy by poe.

Brother to dragons, companion to owls
The wheel of time series
Anything by Orsan Scott Card

And yes all at the same time. Getting a headache but worth it.

I really do love the Mummy, too. He has so many overlooked short stories that it's hard to pick a favorite.

I used to love the Ender's Game series back in the day. Good times.

I'm reading Romeo and Juliet right now because of English class. I just don't like the poetic style of writing that Shakespeare uses.

What grade are you in? I ask only because I felt the exact same way when I began things with Shakespeare. Now that years have passed, I've been warming up to him more and more.

I'm reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card at the moment. It's for a more teenage crowd, but it's a sci-fi book sure to please just about anyone. Especially the video gamers here.
