The U.S. has the cleanest tap water of any country in the world. Because of stubborn people that demand it. But even then it's like "STILL DIRTY! EWW!" Screw that, they can pay $2 for Fiji (which I'll admit, damn nice though!), but I'll stick to tap water and ice. Oh, but water from those water fountains that make it INSANELY cold. Oh God that's just delicious. The Century 8 movie theatre I used to go to back in North Hollywood had one, just outside their arcade. Perfect for quick in-between drinks between stages on MAX 2.
for me its not so much as whether the water is clean(k not going to lie but prefer not to see floaters) i just care about the taste. Tap water taste changes all around the US. In dallas texas Id sooner pay five dollars a gal for water then gas. They way they treat the water leaves it with a slight metalic taste that just plain makes me want to gag. But north say in chicago the water tastes clean. Same goes for south dakota. for some of you this may seem like i'm spewing garbage or am a complete nut case, but try just leave water sitting out for a few days and comparring the taste to fresh water. With any luck you'll taste the diff.

sorry but I'd rather have bottled over tap, and who wants to sell me canned air while I'm at it?

I live in Hawaii, where most of the tap water ISN'T chlorinated. That's why I don't mind drinking from the tap.

Just about everywhere else in the continental US I've been to has had chlorinated tap water (which does NOT taste good). Las Vegas takes the cake for bad tap water. It was so bad that the Sprite syrup that was mixed into my drink couldn't kill the chlorine taste.

I don't mind some tap water, honestly. The stuff at home tasted fine and most cold drinking fountains I like just fine. For me it's about convenience of having bottles since I'm in a dorm and the nearest sink is NOT clean (the tap itself) and it's a pain in the ass. Buying a big jug of nice water and bottles at the convenience stores is just easier, and argue all you want, but Fiji water has the most perfect 'taste' (or lack thereof) of any water I've ever had.

I'm recently fond of the new V8 FUsion banana/strawberry drink. It's delicious for a health drink, I just wish that I could find it in smaller bottles (all I can find are the jugs of it).

Oh, I hate anything with caffeine in it. Can't think of a damn drink that has caffeine that doesn't taste like mud. Coffee, any kind of tea (sweet, cold, whatever), and all caffeinated sodas and simple caffeine/energy drinks are metallic and BLAH.

FLOATERS?

Remind me to avoid the tap you've seen "floaters" come from. I mean, unless it's horrible pipework in the building, I'd be in complete shock to see any little bits and pieces or even critters in my water. But then again, I'm reading it as if you had your water come out with sea foam on top...

Chances are potassium-softened or filtered. Probably the city filtration and processing plant is outdated.

Not at all, you make a pretty valid point. Cities manage their waterworks differently. Some even use outdated machinery and methods.

As for the leaving water out, Mosquitos LOVE still water. They're covered in nothing but nastyness, so consider that as well. Dust floating all around with microbes, it's going to settle in it. You give microbes water, air, and food (dust), you've got more microbes. Leaving water out for days and it tasting funky is a GIVEN. No way would I drink a glass of water sitting still for more than a few hours if I had the choice.

By the way, when I hear "fresh water", I think stream, rivers, lakes, non-ocean water. Natural water. Waters were fish reproduce and the rest of nature defecates in in some cases. Of course I'm exaggerating and natural stream water is very clean. But in the ladder of water cleanliness, it's pretty much Bottled > Tap Filtered > Tap, and unless the pipes are old and nasty, all 3 are quite close. Tap is some of the cleanest water around. Just as long as it's not still and exposed. OF COURSE.

Metallic-like taste? Nothing to be too worried about (kinda echh, though)
Discoloration? PROBLEM.
Little floaty bits? Unless it's just the air bubbles, JUST SAY NO.

Looks like more for me to aim at when I bottle Fetus Water. Better work on the name while I'm at it.

I'm surprised no one here's mentioned Glaceau Vitamin Water. I haven't tried all of them, but I think I tried the yellow one and I really dug it.

Well since you want non alcoholic beverages here is my list:

IBC anything, I really do like the cream soda and root beer flavors;
BAWLS is a good tasting energy drink and I like the bottle;
Arizona green and Ice Tea, I can drink the gallon jug in one day they taste good; they also have new flavors like pomegranate, plum and Mandarin Orange green tea that taste quite good actually;
As for sodas, anything that isn't diet is fine by me;
Red Bull gives me a great kick start in the morning with a starbucks double shot; I once drank 4 red bulls and 2 double shots to start my day of work and I got to tell you I thought I was going to die of a heart failure, It wired me up real well;

Thats it for non alcoholic, but for alcohol I like any hard liquer as long as it is mixed with orange juice or something sweet, The only drink I have been able to drink straight so far is Southern Comfort.

And to the guy who mentioned Absinthe, how does it tastes and what do you feel like afterwards? I have heard they have some alternative to weed in this drink is that true?

Absinthe does not have any after effects for me. It's a nice complex taste. The stuff I got in the past has a very strong anise taste, but you can taste all sorts of other aromatics in there as well. It is quite strong, but it kind of creeps up on you as well. I drink it both straight or the traditional method of diluting it with cold water and sugar which makes it much smoother. If I do take a shot of it, I get a nice, numb feeling around my forehead for a second that I don't get with other alcohols. Liqueurs de France sells very high quality, authentic absinthe. They are pricey, but they have excellent service and quality goods. (And no, you will not go crazy and murder people on a cruise ship if you drink too much.)

Calpico is my favorite. I rarely drink soda, but when I do, I like Dr. Pepper.

Raspberry Iced Tea and Thai Iced Tea are good, too. I love tea.

Why would you ever need bottled water? Holy crap that's stuff is completely, utterly worthless.

I don't like soft water very much. I do like hard water (in other words, not really treated that much, calcium and magnesium in there). It just tastes better.

As for drinks, Henry Weinhardt's root beer and any form of Cherry Limeade are the kings.

Campus tap water has an aftertaste and bottled water is convenient? I'm forced to pay for a meal plan so I might as well buy the fancy Fiji water which seriously tastes like heaven. I buy into the hype, it is the most delicious water ever. It has all your normal dissolved solids in a great balance- silica and calcium and magnesium. Get some Aquafina, and then some Fiji. You'll know which is better.

Maybe I'm just spoiled now. I was fine with tap water at home but this Fiji shit just tastes great. Besides, campus water fountains are scary. Everything is a disease pool here ;___;

By the way, I'm not really defending bottled water. I prefer to buy water by the jugs and keep it in my fridge, much cheaper. You pay more for bottled water than you do for actual soda, which makes me laugh and hate myself for continuing this horrible practice. Most tap water I'm okay with, but some places (like here, which is home for most of the year) it just isn't right. If there's an alternative that I'm more comfortable with, then bottled water is n't worthless to me.
