PROBATION/BANNING

I got an account over at somethingawful.com about 5 month ago I'd say.

I appreciate reading intelligent conversation, which many members here are capable of.

I do not appreciate or tolerate AOL speak, nearing the definition of hacked english words. That's just lazy.

Seriously, if you read the SA forums for a while and come back here, it really is a mindblowing experience.

I am not mocking or trashing these forums in anyway because I have been here the longest and the people here worth talking to are great, wonderful people. Furthermore the subject matter is right up my alley.

But the 12-14 year olds this place can attract just seem so out of place.. they aren't even trying to come off as intelligent. Even some older folks.

In conclusion, I know it is more work, but I wish we could clamp down on some people so they can realize their antics are not wanted here. (Saying PIU SUCKS u.u in a thread that has nothing to do with how much you like PIU, for example.)

..I guess you do not have to take this into consideration, and if you do not I would still come here. It's still worth it to discuss topics with the people worth talking to.

I may do some stupid things, but at least I can type coherent sentences. Not all 14-year olds are idiotic kiddies who speak in AOLese. Most, but not all.

This post reminds me of a feature I wanted.

My Feature Request

At DDR:UK there's a user level called -8: Lemming.

When your user level is set to that, you can't post, but you can PM people.

Could a user level like that be added so that if a person got banned by mistake, he/she could see what the reason for the ban was, realize that a mistake was made, and then send a private message to an administrator saying, "I did not provide links to goatcx. It was that one other user whos post I reported" or something like that.

Do you mean like... something along the lines of making a threat called "PROBATION/BANNING" and then not mentioning anything about either of them within aforementioned thread which was posted in an incorrect forum because of that fact?

This is a forum for ideas on new features and possible changes for the site. And... you just had to vent about stupid people?

A probationary system was the recommended change I was suggesting.

But I don't know if that can be done? I just wanted feedback on the idea.

I assumed that many people knew about Somethingawful's system, and did not need to explain it.

Haha. In retrospect I suppose my initial post did have holes in it. Sorry man.

I hope that we can clean up this site. Especially from people that post just to ask for an illegal file of some sort. Seriously, that is clearly stated NOT to do and should result in an instant ban.

I guess they can just register another account. Is there a way around this?

We have the infraction system which allows us to temporarily ban people until one or more of their infractions expire.

Yes, Phuzion, but you can't PM anyone, or, for that matter, do a single thing besides view the fact that you were banned due to infractions.

What I asked for was a user level where the user couldn't post but could PM people.

How about just making the forums hidden again, to everyone except those who register? That way when someone is browsing through the website, and see the thread "DDR / ITG / Pump / Whatever, Suxors!1!!" they don't feel the sudden need to register for one post, and call everyone an asshole in AOLese and never post again?

Many of the people the OP was complaining about have maybe 1-10 posts to their name.
