The current rating system with the exception of that one complaint is fine. | If you're implying that people could jack up the download count (and thus bump up the rating) by just repeatedly hammering the download script, we could come up with a way to prevent that. It wouldn't be that insanely difficult to make only the first download per account affect the rating of the simfile.

While that would be annoying, yes, we also can't force people to give ratings, as then they'll just put in a "1" or a "10" just because they have to put something in the box to be able to download something else.
Regarding "leeching" prevention as you call it (downloading tons of simfiles but never posting feedback) seems simple enough -- didn't the site have a token cost for all simfile downloads at one point? Why don't we reinstate that? Granted, that would cause an influx of token whores but wasn't one of the very first planned features of 7.0 going to be various things that would eliminate token whoring? Awarding tokens after a 24-hour period and all that?
Preserving the quality of posted simfiles is good (i.e., deleting any file that is rated abnormally low due to sync issues or whatever) but it seems to me that that would be too open to abuse from rating-bombing someone so that their sim gets auto-deleted.

Though I like the idea of downloading sims requiring tokens, in order to balance that out, it should give tokens for comments as well. But this would make it so that one can't comment without downloading either. *sigh* And it isn't just from being annoyed about MY sims not getting rated... I'm tired of downloading endless files that are completely shit and it is completely possible that I'm not the only one. Rate bombings should be watched for though, obviously... however shouldn't there be key factors that would make such an action extraordinarily evident?

"10/10 - I haven't actually played this, since the DL didn't start yet"
Therefore making the system completely pointless.

Therefore making the system completely pointless. | Is EVERY member / admin of this site completely oblivious to the 'Report this Comment' link? Or are we choosing to ignore its existance and possible usefulness? *bangs head on keyboard*

Requiring ratings and comments will result in massive comment-whoring and will drive the moderators and administrators insane, due to the fact that moderating around 100000 bad thingies is not fun and takes away a large chunk of time.
Let's illustrate what I'm saying and assume that after the new feature is implemented, 100,000 stupid/pointless comments appear every week and moderating stupid comments takes about 30 seconds. 100,000 crappy comments x .5 minutes per crappy comment = 50,000 minutes. 50,000 minutes per week, even when divided among all the simulation moderators, is quite a bit of time.
Add that to the possible warning-infraction issuing time and you have yourself three sim moderators in the mental asylum and four on the way there.

I know several people who hardly have time to play Stepmania, let alone rate almost every file they download. I think making it cost tokens to download files would cause a lot more spamming, and discourage a lot of people.
One thing that I think would help is that you should have something to keep track of your 100 most recently downloaded sims, that way it would be waayy easier to give comments instead of having to search the database to find that sim.

I mean, if I just downloaded ten songs it's really annoying to have to look each on up separately. If I had a list, I just go there, and they would all be right there in one spot.
