Default Reduce number of Ratings required for Simfiles to show a rating in the database?

I can't remember if I've posted this before, but I tried a search and turned up nothing.

Would it be possible to reduce the number of votes required for simfiles to show a Rating when viewing them in the database? Since few people vote in the first place, I've only had one sim break the minimum requirement (5, I believe?), with many of my simfiles just under.

I think it would be a great improvement to the database to reduce the required votes for an average rating to show up, anyway, since it seems that only ~1 of every 150 people actually bother to vote, at least judging by most of my sims.

I think it used to be that it only took one vote for it to show up but people complained that the formula already used made their sims show up as bad if the first rating that was recieved was a low one, hence why it was changed. Honestly, there should've been a 'disable ratings for file' feature a long time ago to go with that concern.

As for the idea, I think that's about right; five is a bit high. Most of my sims (about 90) are rated but only five or six of them show up as rated. Three would be fine.

Most files aren't getting rated at all. This whole Bemani scene is too unpopular for that to be fixed. I'd suggest a input limit for simfiles with less than 6 votes, so people who want to submit more have to take a look at other peoples work. Take a look at how newgrounds.com works. It is well done. People get higher voting influence for voting and commenting can be rewarded. That hierarchical system offers people to somewhat improve. MMORPGs use the same methods to get people addicted to them - experience points - collecting items - etc. ... - it all attracts the masses, because the will to enhance is part of human nature. This is a challenge: Background, Banner, Song and synced to that simfile preview with assist trick in browser window if clicking a file. If properly done people could rate simfiles without having to load them into Stepmania. As said, it is a challenge to make something like that. Lots of skill with Flash or Java is neccesary.

Huh?

I'd like to know your standpoint on how 'the whole Bemani scene is unpopular' first before debunking the rest of that. Especially with the philosophical addition of human nature and ripping off FFR; I have to admit that's a nice touch for too many lines. Now at least I can tell where you hail from.

While that sounds interesting, in theory, I'd have to wade through a bunch of nub files in order to get that to work out the way you're talking and as you'll no doubt guess there is a lot of content in the simfile database that really isn't that well-made. It's about 1 'average' sim per 10 'bad 'ones and 1 'good' sim per 10 'average' ones. If someone had to look at a sim or a given number of sims before they could up one because there wasn't enough votes in any given sim, people would be looking at thousands of sims that they'd rather not. Tthe database would have to be changed around as well for simmers to accomodate that idea...a lot...and I know for a fact that the people here are rather slow on the upkeep and vivid ideas such as that would take years to do. In other words, too many overkill changes without a lot of results or fast enough results when it could just easily be fixed with the initial suggestion posted at the start of this thread.

But going further on your idea just to appease a point...sure, that idea allows one (or rather forces a simmer) to give out more comments, but a lot of people aren't looking for actual constructive critique about there simfile and how to get better more than spotlight itself. Why do I say this? Because I've seen many people either get pissed over the fact 'that they s uck' so to speak or just give up simfiling altogether when told how to fix something that may or may not be simple and give up out of frustration...which brings me back to the option of simply disabling ratings/comments altogether AS ON OPTION for those that want it and chasing that idea with the ratings threshold reduced to 3 minimum before it shows up.

Pretty darn easy fix. It'd be nice if comments were necessary to do BEFORE rating could take place as well.
