There are conversion kits for just about every different type of JAMMA cabinet (of which DDR cabs are classified as). You can convert fighting games to shooting games, shooters to fighters, shooters to racing games...
So, no, modification of the hardware obviously isn't something Konami (or any other company) is worried about.
