Step Edits for Pre-existing Songs? (Stupid Question)

This feels like a stupid question, but since I've never done it before, and none of the FAQs I've gone through seem to say anything about it, I'll ask here:

If I did edit steps in Stepmania for a song already in ITG2, do I need to go about loading it on my USB like any sort of custom song, or can I load the .sm file up somehow like a ITG .edit file?

I know about the folder. I'm just wondering if it only works with .edit files you make in ITG proper, or if .sm files from Stepmania work as long as their for songs already in the machine.
