Think of it as investing in the future
This way if someone wanted Guitar Hero as well they'd have to buy the whole guitar plus game, which is less appealing than just expanding on the game you've already bought (Rock Band) for less money at a time (a buck per song or whatever)

For anyone whose holiday purchase was somewhat relying on compatibility with the product they already own (and that is at this point almost a year old) they may see this as a reason to get GHIII instead of Rock Band this holiday season.

That, and they have another company making the parts for Rock Band, not Red Octane. EA Games / MTV Games want mad profits from Harmonix's work, not piggybacking on the previously installed gamer base.
And you can start GH2 / GH3 with the Rock Band controller, but it won't detect anything once you get into song.

This is BS. Activision is locking out Rock Band, not the other way around.

This is BS. Activision is locking out Rock Band, not the other way around. | They need the leverage. GH3 slurps shitballs.
