Default drum controller

While i was staying with my host family in japan, i would walk down to the local arcade every night and play taiko no tatsujin till my wrists were swollen double in size. when i got back to the USA i was sad to find out that i cant find any arcades that have it near Chicago and that the only playstation version we had was a single US one. i have held off on buying this because of the horrid excuse for the American beatmania game. Now that i can play import games on my PS2 i want to get some of the Japanese versions. I've noticed there are 2 kinds of controllers, the official one and the red octane one. Which do you think is better, iv heard a mix of reviews and i want an opinion from here before i buy.

Apparently, the drum I got second hand here is the official US version and it's so much better than the Japanese one I had brand new.

I'm still using the US version drum and it plays perfectly.

So far, there have been three versions of the official tatakon (taiko controller.) The 1st one had a shiny surface, the 2nd one had a more matted, softer rubber face, and the 3rd one has slots in the base stand to hold the bachi (the plastic drum sticks.)

The 1st one was horrendous, since the shiny surface would start to peel and it looked ugly. It also suffered from some faulty wiring that made it break pretty fast.

The 2nd drums were better in that hitting it wasn't as loud as the 1st one, and the wiring inside is a little different so it lasts longer, but the rim sensors are notorious for coming a bit loose after a while, so it would either do phantom hits (the rim would activate even if you only hit the center, or even lightly tap the bottom of the drum), or just not register at all.

The 3rd drums' insides were completely redone, and thus a BIT harder to service, but from what I heard, they're much better than the 2nd generation. They also have a nice little placeholder in the drumstand to hold your sticks when you're not playing.

The US version comes with the 2nd generation drums, and if you're importing a bundle, then getting either the 2nd Anime bundle or the Nanadaime bundle will nab you the 3rd generation tatakon.

You should have gotten the US version, though, since it's cheaper to get that for the drum, and just import the games separately, and to be fair, the song list wasn't that bad for a US music game. The only gripe I had with it was the pop songs did NOT have an Oni chart different from Hard. :\

Taiko is an easy save for a really distinctive and fun experience. I found mine for $15 as well and thought that was pretty cool.

So... where exactly did you buy your drums? (link please)

I wanted to buy either the 2nd gen drum or 3rd gen drum.
The best I could find was this: Buy Taiko no Tatsujin Controller (new version) (PS2) - Order Now! and it's Out Of Stock :/

Where to buy Taiko drums ??

Hi guys,

I'm new here.

I just ordered all the Taiko games for the PS2 (already had the DS and PSP ones and will be importing the Wii version soon).

I was wondering where to get this 3rd version of the drum controller.
If I go to an import store that carries drums, how do I know they're the 3rd version? (serial number, ....)

Thanks for your help!

you can buy the us taiko bundle (with the tatakon included) on amazon for like under 50 dollars, like in the 30-50 range, which is pretty cheap compared to the price theyre going for on ebay... or if you can read japanese, you can try the yahoo auctions at Yahoo! JAPAN (click on the auction hammer icon) they're like ebay, theres lots of sellers that ship internationally!
