OK I have been curious about this game forever, and its one of very very few music games I have never actually played.

I have a bit of spending money and I'm pretty interested in getting set up to try this, what is the best/cheapest route?

If you have a Wii, get the Wii version (I have this version and play it using GeckoOS on my NTSC-U Wii):

Buy Taiko no Tatsujin Wii (no restock until 2009) (Nintendo Wii) - Order Now!

That version has the most songs for a TV console version (70).

Otherwise, there's the English PS2 version?
Buy Taiko Drum Master (w/ Taiko Controller) (PS2) - Order Now!

I'm assuming you can play the JP versions with the drum that comes with the English version as well. Not sure on this one...

I've heard that the Wii drum is better than the PS2's because of the stand, but I have no idea otherwise, since I've never seen the PS2 drum. Can someone with both tell us how it is?

Yeah I'm fine for playing imports. I'm a little worried about the wii version just because there are so many games available for ps2 and only the one for wii...also it seems like the wii one is way more expensive.

Well, the PS2 has been out for way longer :P The last PS2 version came out at the end of 2006... Not to mention, the PS2 is a platform near the end of its life, so I'm not holding my breath for more PS2 Taiko games, given how well the Wii version is apparently doing (and it looks like its sold out AGAIN... I got mine from the second shipment in play-asia). I figure Taiko will be on the Wii for the rest of its lifetime at this rate.

About the PS2 versions, the last two versions had 48 songs each, and the average PS2 JP version has about 40+ songs, excluding old mixes and the anime-songs-only game. The English version has only 33. I guess if I wanted access to more mixes at the present time, I'd go after the PS2 versions...

The best one would be either for Wii OR PSP.

Alright so I have basically obtained a ps2 controller.

What games should I look into getting? Interested in some of the more challenging stuff, but I'd like to see peoples opinions on what versions offer the best/most interesting music as well.

If you're into anime music get Tobikiri! Anime Special.

If you're into a great variety of songs, get Godaime, Rokudaime or Nanadaime. They're all good.

I stand by the Wii version, I like it slot more than the PS2 versions. One of the main reasons is that all of the 2000 series songs are in this one game, as well as the largest tracklist in a console version, around 70 songs.
