Default Playing Taiko DS with the Stylus/Styli

Anyone here other than me play Taiko DS using two styli? It's a nice alternative to actual taiko drums on the PS2/Arcade versions, but the lack of multiple presses at once on the touchscreen makes it kind of hard. This is why there are areas on the touchscreen to hit for the big notes (direct center of drum for red, outer edge of the drum for blue). When doing a song with alot of difficult maneuvers, you want your stylus to be off the screen as fast as possible after hitting a note to hit the next series of notes.

I recorded a video of myself playing one of the hardest songs on the recent Taiko DS release to show how I play the game with styli: YouTube - NRS - EkiBEN2000 . I hold the stylus wrapped around my last 3 fingers, held on the side by my thumb, while resting my index finger on top. My index provides downward thrust for fast hits (kind of like index players for Stepmania).

I as well love playing with the two styli. I find it actally eaiser on the DS version than on the actual PS2 version.

Also when you get the big red notes you can actually hit them without technically hitting the center of the drum. See the touch screen on a ds only accepts one input at a time. So if you give it two inputs, it will detect it as the center of the two points.

So for instance if you push the right side of the drum and the left side down at the same time, you will see the hit mark appear in the center of the drum. kinda neat to know

Considering the game comes with two multi colored styli (as well as a bunch of stickers to mod it with.) to play with, Im assuming thats what your suppost to do. Playing Ekiben2000 oni with one stylus is probably impossible.

on the ds version, i ONLY use the stylus, and with one hand too! (except for on the rolls then i quickly put the stylus inbetween my index and middle finger and use my thumbs on the controll pads, and ive successfully gotten 142 gold crowns and 50 silver crowns! not to brag or anything XD) i find that using two stylusses is just anoying because of the ds' touch screen not being multi-touch...*sigh* maybe the next nintendo handheld will be more taiko compatable, i gotta learn how to play with the buttons...=P

Jesus Christ you're a beast. D:

I still don't understand what you mean for the big red and big blue notes. Watched the video and still don't understand it.

I'm probably going to sell my DS to my sister and get a different color one, so may need to pick this UP.

Theres a darker red and darker blue right on the edge of the rim (As opposed to hitting it farther outside the drum) and in the very center.

You will have to learn how to use two stylus or you are gonna hit a brick wall that you will never be able to pass

I used to use the buttons on my DS, but once I started doing some of the harder muzukashii and oni songs, I quickly realized that I'd have to practice using the styli. There's just no way around it.

I still suck at it (I really need to work on my speed or I'll never even get close to passing a song like EkiBEN2000), but I'm getting a little better.

What are you talking about? I've full combo'd plenty of song using the buttons. I've been doing it since Portable 1 for the PSP, and there's no touch screen there. :colbert:

Just talking about me. I'm sure it's more than possible to do oni songs using only the buttons, but playing that way tends to cramp my hands very quickly. So my only option is using the styli. Sorry if that was unclear.

Yeah, I thought that was an interesting work-around for the touch screen. Too bad it's only one input at a time, otherwise it would be way more responsive.

I ment you cant play the game very far using ONE stylus only. Corner buttons are fine i guess. I would assume everythings possible there. But one stylus tapping all the notes in some of those songs on oni? Not gonna happen.

Boy, I tried using regular stylus but seeing how impact wasn't to my taste I never use anything other than the stylii that came with the game.
(I even use it on other games from time to time, mostly when I'm home. Bachipen isn't exactly portable)

I FCed Super Mario Bros on Oni with one stylus (except in a couple of places), but when using two my performance drops.

I really don't like the touch screen's inability to take multiple inputs at the same time. (it just averages the coordinates) If I get off beat my input doesn't get read. (When playing on arcade/PS2 I tend to rest my drumstick on the surface when notes aren't showering. Do this on DS, and I get tons of malrecognitions)

Because DS averages coordinates, you can hit both sides of Don at the same time and get the double score for big notes. It's possible for big kat as well, but the position isn't ideal.
