I think the fact that the BMSes existed may have been a contributing factor - DJMAX really has prided itself on having a really 'polished' feel and a very unique content lineup.
A lot of Japanese music game enthusiasts are heavily into BMSing - SHIKI, Akito, yamajet, CRANKY, onoken, Est (not ESTi) just to name a few, and that's barely scratching the surface.
If someone were to scoop up the whole bunch and make a commercial music game, it'd be an instant recipe for success. Their limiting factor all these years really has been filesize and format-type constraints - (for example BMPs for BGA, and being limited to .wav by and large due to compatibility issues with various sims) and a singular cohesive game vision. DJMAX already scooped up Tsukasa - although I guess he's more commercial than doujin considering his past work. |
