Music game misconceptions.

Yes, we all have heard that god-damn claim, "beatmania is a Guitar Hero rip-off." We're fed up with it.

Moving on, another misconception that's still stuck in my mind is the notion, "smile .dk is one of the founding artists of DDR."

In addition, in GFdm, there's that f'n myth of a non-existent "Timepiece Phase" series.

Are there any other misconceptions of this kind? Please feel free to share.

I loved finding out earlier this week, that, to my surprise, apparently Naoki is the single stepfile creator for DDR! Imagine my shock. (Please note: yes, I'm aware of how wrong this is.)

Another good one: "PIU ripped off Pop'n Stage".

Here's some big ones I had when I knew little about Bemani:

- dj TAKA is an extremely popular composer in Japan and has several hits on DDR.
- The Japanese home versions of DDR are identical to those of the US, only in their domestic language.
- All songs, including those from Other Bemani Games (which, at the time, I knew just about squat of), are exclusive to DDR.
- DDR was the first music game, not beatmania.

There are two common misconceptions of the IIDX video behind Naoki's Be Rock U (1998 burst style):

#1. I'm surprised that a lot of people think this is sung by BeForU. If one can read, it distinctly says featuring Digicco in the beginning of the video.

#2. The person playing the guitar is one damn fine chick. For those who are already infatuated with this person, I'm sorry to say that it's actually Naoki, who is a dude.

Depends on how you define it, I guess. They had a song in the very first DDR game, so I can see how you could consider them a "founding artist".

The most common misconception I see is the belief that the really good players of IIDX or whatever memorise the songs completely. Or even the not so good players, such as myself. Whenever I play something for someone who's never seen IIDX before, invariably the first comment is "whoa, so did you memorise that whole thing or what?". I knew one guy who was absolutely adamant in his belief that the top players all memorised the songs and would absolutely not be convinced otherwise no matter what I said. Apparently he "knew people" who did exactly that, or something.

(speaking of which, i saw a true-blue 100% real Japanese Extreme Cab with the 'advertizing border' around it at the six flags near me. total screen discoloration, but nevertheless, real. i came.)
